The Judicial Police issued an alert about a new scam that is circulating through fraudulent messages, in which criminals impersonate the Portuguese tax authorities. The scheme attempts to convince victims that they have an "approved 2025 refund", taking advantage of the expectation of many taxpayers to receive money from the State.
The scammers use the promise of a large sum to persuade people to provide personal data and authentication information. This way, they manage to access victims' bank accounts and other online services.
This type of fraud falls into the phishing category, where the authors use social engineering to manipulate victims and obtain unauthorized access to their sensitive data.
