João Paulo Santos, trainer of Benfica's eagle, was arrested by authorities on suspicion of involvement in a cocaine trafficking scheme. According to available information, the trainer is suspected of having helped a friend who works as an airport employee.
The trainer's participation in the scheme consisted of helping his friend remove suitcases from the normal collection and inspection circuit at the airport. This action facilitated access to the drugs that were being transported in the luggage.
Authorities believe that this cooperation between the Benfica eagle trainer and the airport employee was fundamental to the functioning of the cocaine trafficking scheme, allowing the usual security controls to be bypassed.
