Unit II of Colégio Tamandaré, in Recreio dos Bandeirantes, western zone of Rio de Janeiro, receives on Monday a team from the Centro Municipal de Saúde Harvey Ribeiro de Souza Filho to guide students and guardians after an incident during a science fair held on Saturday. The visit is scheduled to occur from 11am to 2pm.
During the science activity, a student used the same lancet — an instrument that pierces the finger to collect blood — on up to three people during blood glucose tests. Almost all participants were children, but at least one adult also underwent the procedure, according to parent reports confirmed by the institution.
By the end of Sunday afternoon, at least 23 people had sought hospitals for prophylactic treatment. Of these, 20 were attended at Hospital Municipal Lourenço Jorge, in Barra da Tijuca, and three others in the private network, according to information from the school.
According to a statement released by the school on Sunday, health professionals will clarify doubts and help affected people understand the next steps. The school administration reported that it is monitoring the situation and offering support to the families involved.
