The Municipal Markets of Olhão were elected as one of the New 7 Wonders of Portugal. The competition final involved 21 candidates and was broadcast on Saturday night on TVI.
The municipality celebrated the distinction on social media, stating that the name of Olhão and the Algarve rises to the place it deserves, carrying with it the history, identity and soul of a city deeply connected to the sea, the Ria and its people.
The note published on the Facebook page of the Municipal Markets of Olhão considered that the distinction belongs to all who, over generations, made the Markets a unique place, including operators, traders, buyers and visitors who recognize in the Markets an inseparable part of the city's identity.
The Mayor of Olhão, Ricardo Calé, also congratulated the markets on social media, stating that the distinction honors Olhão. He mentioned that the operators, traders and everyone who daily contributes to the soul of the Markets deserves congratulations. The remaining six elected wonders were the Castle of Leiria, the Aqueduct of Usseira in Óbidos, the Ruins of São Cucufate in Vidigueira, the Cathedral of Lisbon, the Tiago Cabaço Winery in Estremoz and the Garden of the Episcopal Palace in Castelo Branco.
