The Algarve visual artist Vanessa Barragão will lead, on Sunday, September 20, at 3:00 PM, a free introductory crochet workshop at AlgarveShopping, aimed at young people and adults with no experience in the technique. The session, titled "First Stitches in Crochet", will last about 45 minutes and will allow participants to learn basic stitches and try out the technique, with all materials provided on site. Spaces are limited and registration is done through the shopping center's website.
The workshop takes place on Floor 0, next to the artist's installation "Genesis", which remains on display at AlgarveShopping until the end of September. The work is composed of three organic suspended sculptures, produced from approximately 20,000 discarded plastic bags collected from the shopping center itself, proposing a reflection on waste, reuse and transformation through art.
Internationally recognized, Vanessa Barragão has presented her work in cities such as Sydney, New York, London and Tokyo. The artist has been developing projects focused on the connection between textile practices, nature and sustainability, notably "Living Coral", offered by Portugal to the United Nations, and "Botanical Tapestry", installed at Terminal 2 of Heathrow Airport in London.
In 2025, Vanessa Barragão also presented "Diving. The Landscapes of Vanessa Barragão", as part of the project "Art Has Arrived at Colombo", in Lisbon, an exhibition that received more than 100,000 visitors, according to the organizers.
