72-year-old man dies after fall in rocky area at Penha

Mais Guimarães14 September 2026 at 07:32

A 72-year-old man died on Sunday after suffering a fall in a rocky area of the tourist resort of Penha, in Guimarães. The alert was given at 3:54 PM and, when the emergency services arrived at the scene, the victim was already in cardiorespiratory arrest.

The Volunteer Firefighters of Guimarães, who were mobilized at Penha due to the 133rd Archipresbyteral Pilgrimage, provided assistance at the scene, with support from the Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER) from Hospital da Senhora da Oliveira.

Despite the resuscitation maneuvers carried out by the emergency teams, it was not possible to reverse the situation, and death was declared at the scene. Everything indicates that an accidental fall occurred, although the circumstances of the incident are being investigated by the PSP, which took charge of the occurrence.

Penha received thousands of faithful on that Sunday for the traditional Archipresbyteral Pilgrimage, an event now in its 133rd edition.

Why this matters

The incident directly affects participants in the Archipresbyteral Pilgrimage at Penha and the community of Guimarães, alerting to safety risks in rocky areas during events with large concentrations of people. The PSP investigation may lead to new prevention measures or signage of dangerous areas in the tourist area.
