Águas do Rio will begin sanitation works this month in Duque de Caxias and Nilópolis, in Baixada Fluminense, with a total investment of R$466 million. The goal is to stop sending 71 million liters of sewage per day to the region's rivers, benefiting 325 thousand residents.
In Duque de Caxias, R$300 million will be invested to remove more than 29 million liters of sewage per day from Rio Farias, a volume equivalent to 11 Olympic swimming pools. The work includes the construction of the Farias Sewage Treatment Station (ETE), in addition to collection points and a new collection network, covering nine neighborhoods: Pilar, Campos Elíseos, Jardim Primavera and Saracuruna.
In Nilópolis, the investment will be R$166 million and should prevent another 42 million liters of daily sewage from reaching the Pavuna and Sarapuí rivers. With the removal of sewage from the rivers, the population should also face less bad smell and less contact with contaminated water.
