Lisbon will organize on September 16th a bike ride to showcase the cycling connections being built near schools, as part of the international BICI project. The initiative is promoted by Lisboa E-Nova, the capital's energy and environment agency, and marks the launch of European Mobility Week in Lisbon. The event includes a morning moment with the ride and another in the afternoon with an open conversation for all who want to transform the streets.
The ride starts at 9 AM at Campo Grande 13, where Lisboa E-Nova is headquartered, and goes through various areas of the city, including stops at Rotunda do Relógio, at Escola Adriano Correia de Oliveira, at Escola Sarah Afonso and ends at Praça da Figueira. During the route, interventions that have been completed or are in project will be visited, such as the connection from the cycling lane on Avenida do Brasil to Escola Secundária Padre António Vieira, in Alvalade, and the connection from the cycling lane on Avenida de Berlim to Escola Básica Adriano Correia de Oliveira, in Olivais.
BICI is a project that started in July 2023 and challenged cities around the world to improve and expand their cycling network, with technical assistance from the Global Designing Cities Initiative and funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies. Lisbon was one of 10 cities selected and chose to address missing connections in segregated cycling infrastructure, especially near schools. The city has the cycling network team from the Municipal Council, GDCI specialists and Lisboa E-Nova representatives during the event.
In the afternoon, a conversation takes place at Pátio da Água, an EPAL space near Restauradores, where Lisbon City Council and Oeiras City Council will also participate, which is preparing a bid for the second edition of BICI. The ride requires no registration, but the afternoon conversation has space limitations and requires advance registration through an online form.
