Rome declared a "red zone" security perimeter around the Colosseum to protect tourists after violent crime incidents in the area. The measure aims to reinforce security in one of the most frequented tourist zones of the Italian capital.
In the new red zone, local police presence will be reinforced 24 hours a day, in conjunction with military presence. Italian armed forces already protect the most frequented tourist attractions with barriers and temporary checkpoints.
However, the armed agents dressed in camouflage uniforms, accompanied by military vehicles, apparently have not constituted a sufficient deterrent for the small-time criminals who continue to operate in the area.
