Hunter finds the largest Viking treasure ever found in Finland

extra13 September 2026 at 13:00

The treasure hunter Kalle Lappine discovered the largest Viking treasure ever found in Finland. The discovery took place near the church village of Sysmä, in the Päijät-Häme region, on September 3. Kalle was almost about to give up searching that day, but when he was walking with his metal detector, he received a sudden signal that led him to dig into the soil.

According to a local museum spokesperson, this is the largest Late Iron Age coin deposit ever discovered in the country. The Late Iron Age period spans the years between 800 and 1300. The coins found are silver and are part of a treasure of significant historical value.

In addition to the silver coins, cut silver fragments, a silver bracelet, a silver finishing piece, and a silver bead were found. The two birch bark containers that held the items were found about 45 centimeters deep, between stones and approximately 12 meters apart from each other.

The area of the discovery was visited by archaeologist Esko Tikkala, who was amazed by the find. The website "What's the Jam" recorded the expert's reaction to the treasure found by the hunter in Finland.

Why this matters

This discovery represents an archaeological milestone for Finland, revealing a Viking treasure of exceptional historical value that may provide new information about trade and life in the Viking Era in the country. The confirmation of the find's importance by local archaeologists may attract international attention to the Päijät-Häme region and boost studies on Viking presence in Finland.

The Beach of Cabanas de Tavira, in the Algarve, was highlighted in 2025 as one of the cleanest in the world, accessible only by boat from the quay on Avenida Ria Formosa, in the center of the town, on a journey of less than five minutes to the island. With about seven kilometres in length, the beach is part of the Ria Formosa Natural Park and maintains the Blue Flag, a distinction that assesses criteria such as water quality, environmental management, safety and education. Maintaining environmental conditions involves work from local authorities and awareness campaigns from Taviraverde, a municipal company, against plastic pollution.
