The New 7 Wonders of Portugal® contest concluded on September 12, after a historic edition that received over 600 applications from across the national territory, including the autonomous regions. The applications were distributed across seven categories: Castles, Religion, History, Great Works, 20th Century, 21st Century and Tourism.
In May, the Queluz National Palace, in Sintra, hosted the ceremony announcing the 147 finalist heritage sites. Among them were the National Palace of Mafra, in the History category, and the National Hunting Park of Mafra, in the Tourism category, which advanced to the Regional Semi-Final of Greater Lisbon but fell short in the Regional Final.
Over the past few months, the 147 numerous heritage sites were evaluated and voted on in the various stages of the contest dedicated to the enhancement and promotion of Portuguese heritage. The seven winners were: Castle of Leiria (Castles), Aqueduto da Usseira in Óbidos (Great Works), Ruins of São Cucufate in Vidigueira (History), Lisbon Cathedral (Religion), Olhão Markets (20th Century), Tiago Cabaço Winery in Estremoz (21st Century) and Garden of the Episcopal Palace in Castelo Branco (Tourism).
