The UN General Assembly voted last week overwhelmingly in favor of adopting a new World Map, which shows the continents in their actual sizes. The resolution was approved with 164 votes in favor and six abstentions. The United States was the only member to oppose the measure, with American representative Yaryna Ferencevych stating that the resolution was "the reason why this institution is losing credibility."
The countries are not opposed to the new map itself, but rather to the color tones used in the representation. This color issue has been causing discomfort among various nations, including Japan, India, and Ukraine, which expressed apprehension about how they are represented cartographically.
With this historic decision, the UN is now promoting the Equal Earth projection, which was created by three researchers. This projection allows for a more faithful representation of the actual dimensions of the continents, altering the traditional geographic perspective that has been used for decades.
