Almost 300 people were detained during demonstrations in memory of the victims of Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship in Chile. The arrests occurred during protests held on the anniversary of the 1973 coup d'état.
For the first time since the return of democracy in 1990, the anniversary was not marked by any official ceremony. This absence of official commemoration reportedly triggered the demonstrations led by the opposition and human rights movements.
Chilean authorities justified the detentions by stating that the protests took place without authorization and due to alleged public disorder situations during the protest acts.
