An extreme heat wave hit France, causing exceptional climatic conditions that directly affected champagne production. The high temperatures recorded in the European country are causing a significant impact on the vineyards of the Champagne region.
As a consequence of the intense heat, the alcohol content of French champagne rose to 15%, a level considered above normal for the drink. This increase in the alcohol percentage results directly from the adverse climatic conditions faced by the vines during the ripening period.
The Champagne region recorded the earliest harvest in its history due to extreme weather conditions. Producers were forced to advance the grape harvest to prevent excessive heat from further compromising the quality and traditional characteristics of champagne.
Experts warn that these climate changes may represent a long-term challenge for champagne production, requiring adaptations in cultivation techniques and vineyard management to maintain the characteristic quality of the French drink.
