Human waste transformed can replace cement and make concrete stronger

A team of researchers managed to transform human fecal sludge into biochar and incorporate it into concrete, achieving significant improvements in its mechanical properties. The study was published in the journal Scientific Reports and suggests this approach can open a path to reducing solid waste and cement consumption in civil construction.

The scientists collected the material at a fecal sludge treatment plant located in Warangal, India. The waste was first dried and subsequently subjected to a pyrolysis process, which consists of heating the material under low oxygen conditions, allowing the obtainment of biochar.

The results demonstrated that incorporating biochar derived from fecal sludge into concrete allowed significant improvements in the mechanical strength of the material. This discovery is particularly relevant because cement is one of the most widely used construction materials in the world, but also one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

Beyond the benefits for the construction industry, the study also points to environmental advantages, since the process of transforming fecal sludge into biochar offers a solution for solid waste management, transforming a problematic byproduct into a useful material.
