Would You Ride in a Driverless Taxi? Robotaxis Are Already Circulating in London

SIC Notícias12 September 2026 at 19:45

The Wayve company began testing its robotaxis on the streets of London, becoming one of the first European cities to adopt this autonomous vehicle technology for passenger transport. The vehicles currently operate with a human supervisor present to intervene if needed.

Wayve guarantees that the technology is safe and that its autonomous driving systems are capable of handling the complexity of London urban traffic, including pedestrians, cyclists and other unpredictable situations.

However, the company acknowledges that the technology is still not ready to operate completely without human supervision. The tests are part of a development phase aimed at refining the systems before a potential expansion.

London is positioning itself as a strategic territory for the development of autonomous vehicles in Europe, attracting investment and technological innovation in this growing sector.

Why this matters

Readers in Lisbon and the Algarve, regions with strong tourism presence and mobility challenges, may be affected by this technology in the future, should it expand to other European countries. The safety and human supervision required demonstrate that the technology, although promising, is not yet fully mature, raising questions about when and how it can be implemented on a broader scale in other cities.
