Portuguese researchers developed an enzyme capable of degrading plastic. This discovery represents a significant advance in the fight against pollution caused by plastic materials, which are notoriously difficult to decompose in the environment.
The enzyme originated from a bacterium found in compost in Denmark. Portuguese scientists analyzed this bacterium and managed to isolate and develop the enzyme responsible for the plastic decomposition capability.
This research opens new possibilities for environmental cleanup solutions, although further studies may still be needed to make the process viable on a large scale.
