Spain will restore the Mar Menor through solutions based on natural processes. The Spanish government is implementing two new systems in the Murcia region to treat contaminated groundwater affecting this lagoon.
The two systems will be able to treat up to 1.5 million cubic meters of groundwater per year. This treatment capacity represents a significant milestone in the region's environmental recovery efforts.
The systems combine three types of natural solutions: organic filters, green filters, and semi-natural wetland areas. These nature-based techniques allow water to be filtered and purified sustainably, without resorting to aggressive chemical processes.
The Mar Menor is a coastal lagoon that has suffered serious pollution problems in recent years, mainly due to excess nutrients from intensive agriculture in its surroundings.
