After the tragedy, a new beginning. A Greek couple managed to welcome a baby this week, born from an embryo that had been frozen for over two decades. The little girl is named Georgia, in honour of Giorgos, the couple's 21-year-old son whom they lost in a road accident in October.
The mother, Cristina Rapti-Tzelepi, is 54 years old and, together with her husband, decided to pursue a new attempt at in vitro fertilisation just a few months after losing their son. Time was scarce, a race against the clock to make this dream come true.
The embryo used in the procedure had been frozen for 22 years, making this case particularly special. Despite the prolonged cryopreservation time, the implantation process was successful and resulted in the healthy birth of the baby.
This story of resilience took place in Greece, where the couple decided to start from scratch after the worst moment of their lives. The birth of Georgia represents not only a new life, but also a way to keep alive the memory of the brother she will never have the opportunity to meet.
