The city of Daytona Beach, Florida, may receive Volusia County's first water taxi. The novelty is linked to a real estate project called The Aegean, which plans the construction of a condominium inspired by the islands and villages of the Aegean Sea, in Greece, in a currently vacant area on South Peninsula Drive.
The development includes not only residential units but also a marina and boat facility. The proposal contemplates the possibility of using a water taxi to connect different points in the region via the Halifax River, offering a mobility alternative for residents and visitors.
The initiative aligns with the city's official planning, which already foresees in its Comprehensive Plan the pursuit of resources for the implementation of piers and structures to support the development of water taxis as a circulation alternative in revitalization areas. The proposal was presented to municipal authorities and is being followed by the community.
If it moves forward, the project could transform the Halifax River into a new transportation route and place Volusia County on the map of Florida destinations with water taxi service, bringing Daytona Beach closer to other American cities that use their rivers and bays as part of their mobility systems.
