Mafra | Brigadier-General Martins de Bastos Assumes Command of the School of Arms

Jornal de Mafra12 September 2026 at 12:24

Brigadier-General Bartolomeu Pedro Martins de Bastos took office as the new Commander of the School of Arms, in Mafra, succeeding Major-General Octávio João Marques Avelar. The ceremony took place at the "Magalheses Osório" Parade and included ceremonial moments such as the signing of the Command Term of Office, the delivery of the National Standard, and the imposition of the Coat of Arms on the new responsible.

Martins de Bastos joined the Military Academy in 1988 and was promoted to the rank of Brigadier-General in August 2026. His predecessor, Marques Avelar, had been serving as Commander of the School of Arms since January 2025.

The Portuguese Army carried out two changes in its command structure this week. In addition to the takeover ceremony in Mafra, Marques Avelar took up the position of Director of Training, in Évora, in a move that represents a swap of positions between the two units.

Why this matters

This command change directly affects military training in Portugal, as the School of Arms is a central institution in the preparation of future officers and troops of the Army. Readers from the Mafra region, where the school is based, and family members of military personnel in training have an interest in following who leads this institution. The change is part of a broader reorganization of the Portuguese military command structure, evidencing a rotation of top positions in the Armed Forces.

Gilmar Mendes Renews Demand for Full Access to Vorcaro's Cell Phone Data

Justice Gilmar Mendes once again demanded that the full data extracted from Daniel Vorcaro's cell phone be made available to all Supreme Federal Court justices who will participate in the trial regarding the alleged connection between Vorcaro and Justice Alexandre de Moraes. In a ruling issued this Saturday (12), Gilmar Mendes reiterated the request for copies of the media to be provided urgently, should the rapporteur Justice André Mendonça's office not make them available, requesting them from the Federal Police if necessary. According to Mendes, this measure will allow for a more complete deliberation and enable each justice to form their opinion based on a full analysis of the evidentiary record. On Friday (11), after demands from Justice Cristiano Zanin, André Mendonça had warned that disclosing the full material could compromise ongoing operations.
