One year ago, the largest wave of methanol-tainted drink poisoning ever recorded in Brazil was beginning. The first death was confirmed on September 16, 2025: businessman Ricardo Lopes Mira, 54 years old. By the end of 2025, the country recorded 890 notifications, 73 confirmed cases and 22 deaths.
In São Paulo, the total reaches 54 cases and 12 deaths. Radharani Dasi Domingos was one of the victims: she had three caipirinhas at a bar in the Avenida Paulista area, celebrating a friend's birthday. She spent five days in an induced coma and fifteen days hospitalized, undergoing hemodialysis.
The interior designer survived, but did not recover her vision. Today she can only see silhouettes. She, who used to choose colors and textures for her clients' homes, attributes her situation to the irresponsibility of the bar and the State.
The crisis turned cachaça, gin and whiskey into a risk of life, and changed the way bars buy drinks, one year after the beginning of the cases.
