Exclusive Glorioso 1904 - Benfica closed El Karouani, but Plan A was from Wolverhampton

Glorioso 1904 – Se é notícia do Benfica, está aqui12 September 2026 at 03:00

Hugo Bueno was Benfica's Plan A for the left-back position. The 23-year-old Spanish defender, belonging to Wolverhampton, coached by César Peixoto, was the eagles' first choice to strengthen the defensive sector. The Luz club even started formal negotiations with Wolves, but the operation ultimately failed to reach a successful conclusion.

Given the difficulties in signing Hugo Bueno, Benfica moved forward with an alternative and found in Soffiane El Karouani the Plan B for the left side of defense. The Moroccan full-back, coming from Al Qadsiah, arrived on loan until the end of the season.

The agreement also includes a purchase option that should be around 10 million euros. During the loan period, Benfica and Al Qadsiah will split the payment of the player's salary.
