The National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedics (INTO) is running a campaign for blood donation due to low stocks at the hospital's blood bank. HemoINTO is managing to collect only about five blood bags per day, when the ideal level to meet demand should be 30 bags daily.
To boost collection, special service will be offered to donors this Saturday, from 8am to 5pm. All blood types are needed, with O negative and O positive blood being the most urgent.
The health unit is responsible for more than 60% of medium and high complexity orthopedic surgeries performed in the city of Rio de Janeiro and more than 40% in the state. In many cases, especially in hip, spine, and knee surgeries, there is a need for blood transfusions.
