Minister Gilmar Mendes, the senior minister of the Supreme Federal Court, sent an official communication to the president of the Court, Edson Fachin, asking him to take over the conduct of the proceedings involving ministers Alexandre de Moraes and André Mendonça. Gilmar also advocated, in practice, that the trial scheduled for next Tuesday be postponed.
In the document sent this Friday, Gilmar argues that the case needs to be first instructed and delimited before being submitted to the judgment by the full STF. The senior minister's request represents a direct intervention in the court's agenda.
Gilmar's request occurs at a time of tension in the court, which has been dealing with sensitive issues related to its own composition and functioning. It now falls to Edson Fachin to decide on the postponement and on the transfer of the conduct of the proceedings.
