Portugal resumed natural gas imports from Russia in 2025, after having significantly reduced these purchases in previous years. This situation occurs in a context where the country had been diversifying its energy supply sources.
The Portuguese government set a goal to end Russian LNG imports by the beginning of 2027. This commitment is part of a broader strategy to reduce energy dependence on Russia.
European rules determine the gradual elimination of gas purchases from Russia, and Portugal aligns with this European Union orientation. The country thus intends to ensure greater security in its energy supply.
