Sines was the gateway for 97% of gas that arrived in Portugal in 2025

Alentrium11 September 2026 at 21:07

The Sines Liquefied Natural Gas Terminal ensured 97% of gas entries in Portugal during 2025, receiving 46 methane carriers that unloaded 47.7 terawatt-hours of LNG. This number represents seven fewer vessels than in 2024, although the quantity of LNG decreased by only 1.5%.

Nigeria and the United States concentrated 93% of the cargoes received, with Nigeria representing 52% and the United States 41%. Russia accounted for the remaining 7%, having doubled its share compared to 2024, when it corresponded to only 1% of the LNG received.

Land interconnections with Spain, at Campo Maior and Valença, totaled only 1.5 TWh in imports, corresponding to approximately 3% of entries into the national system. In the opposite direction, Portugal exported 3.4 TWh to Spain, maintaining an export balance for the second consecutive year.

National gas consumption grew 11% to approximately 45 TWh, driven by electricity production. Sines also sent 2.2 TWh via tanker trucks to Autonomous Gas Units, the highest annual volume ever recorded by this route. Regasification at the terminal reached 46.8 TWh, with an occupancy rate of approximately 61%.

Sines received 95% of the gas that entered Portugal and three Russian ships in 2025

About 95% of the natural gas that entered Portugal in 2025 arrived through the Sines terminal, with Nigeria representing 50% of the discharges, the United States 43% and Russia 7%, according to ERSE. Forty-six discharges of methane vessels were carried out at the LNG terminal, seven fewer than in 2024, and three Russian ships discharged energy equivalent to 3.3 TWh, the same number and volume as in 2024. Portugal intends to end Russian LNG imports by early 2027, with Spanish company Naturgy being the only company with a long-term contract to import Russian gas. The ERSE report also indicates an overall improvement in gas network performance, with a reduction in interruptions, although Lisboagás did not comply with the standard regarding the average number of interruptions.
