The closure of the country's largest prison will be carried out in several phases until 2028, in a process that will significantly affect the Portuguese prison system. The impact of this decision will be felt in 11 prisons spread across the national territory.

Currently, there are 250 prisoners in this prison who will be redistributed to three different destinations. The transfer of prisoners will be done in a phased manner over the next few years.

Among the male destinations, the prisons of Guarda and Viseu are planned to receive a significant part of the prison population. This redistribution implies a logistical reorganization and of human resources in these institutions.

In addition to transfers to male prison facilities, some of the prisoners will be transferred to the female prison of Odemira, which represents an unusual situation in the context of prison transfers.
