Starting November 22, supermarkets in Portugal will implement the Deposit, Return and Refund System (SDDR), which will change the way consumers pay for certain beverages. This change will affect the purchase of water bottles, soda cans and juice or milk cartons.
With the implementation of SDDR, consumers will pay an additional deposit of at least 10 cents for each packaging unit covered by the system. This amount will be added to the final price of the product at the supermarket checkout.
The objective of this new system is to encourage recycling and the return of empty containers. When the consumer returns the packaging at the designated collection point, they will receive back the deposit value paid initially.
This measure is part of a broader strategy to promote the circular economy and reduce the environmental impact of packaging waste in Portugal.
