Brussels intends to make cross-border energy network planning more coordinated. The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy presented a proposal with the aim of accelerating investments in the energy sector, simplifying licensing processes and strengthening interconnections between the energy systems of the European Union's Member States.
The proposal comes in a context of the need to modernise and integrate European energy infrastructure, which are considered essential to ensure energy security and the transition to renewable sources. Coordinated planning aims to avoid redundancies and optimise available resources among the different countries.
With this initiative, the Commission intends to create a more harmonised regulatory framework that facilitates the construction of new interconnections and energy sharing between Member States. The coordination also aims to reduce bureaucratic obstacles that frequently delay the implementation of cross-border energy projects.
