EU residence visas rise 10.1% Brazil in 4th place

Observador11 September 2026 at 15:20

EU residence visas recorded a 10.1% increase, reflecting a growing trend of immigration to the European bloc. This significant growth indicates a renewed demand from third-country citizens seeking to legally establish themselves in the European space.

The motives that dominated the issuance of new residence permits were employment, family, and education. These three reasons represent the main pathways to migratory legalization in the EU, demonstrating that migratory flows are driven by both economic reasons as well as family reunification and academic pursuits.

In the ranking of countries of origin of beneficiaries of European residence visas, Brazil occupies fourth place. Brazilian citizens are only behind citizens of India, Morocco, and Ukraine, who hold the top three positions in the ranking.

These data highlight the importance of Brazil as a source of immigrants for Europe, positioning the South American country as one of the main contributors to legal migratory flows directed to the European bloc.

Farewell driving licence: these drivers can lose it in October if they don't do this

Portuguese drivers should check the validity of their driving licence during October, as renewal rules vary according to the date the licence was obtained. Those who obtained their licence before January 2013 must renew at 50, 60, 65 and 70 years old, with renewal then becoming every two years after 70. For licences obtained between 2013 and 2016, the first renewal follows the date indicated on the licence, followed by renewals every 15 years until age 60. Licences obtained after July 2016 have their first renewal 15 years later. From age 60, an electronic medical certificate is required. If validity expires, the driver is prevented from driving legally and may face additional requirements to recover the title.
