GNR REINFORCES SCHOOL SAFETY WITH "SAFE SCHOOL" CAMPAIGN 2026/2027

Canal N – Notícias – Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro11 September 2026 at 15:02

The GNR launched this Friday, September 11, the "Safe School" campaign for the 2026/2027 academic year, covering more than 4,400 educational establishments and approximately 670,000 students throughout the mainland territory. The operation includes awareness-raising actions and community policing aimed at students, teachers and parents, with the objective of preventing risk behaviors, situations of violence and other incidents that may compromise safety inside and in the surroundings of schools.

In the past academic year, the GNR recorded 2,631 crimes in school settings. Among the most frequent cases were simple voluntary physical assault offenses, with 950 incidents, followed by threats and coercion, with 388 cases. Additionally, 748 non-criminal incidents were recorded, including 374 disruptions of school activities and 230 cases of school dropout. More than 790,000 members of the school community were covered by GNR actions, which carried out 17,276 awareness-raising activities.

This year's campaign includes special attention to bullying and cyberbullying, online safety, dating violence and road safety. The Criminal Prevention and Community Policing Sections, with more than 400 military personnel, will reinforce school monitoring through community patrols, awareness-raising actions and identification of children and young people in at-risk situations, in coordination with the relevant authorities.

Regarding road safety, the GNR alerts to the mandatory use of seatbelts and child restraint systems, at a time when traffic increases near educational establishments during the back-to-school period.
