Meta, the company that owns Facebook, Instagram and Threads, confirmed that the Community Notes system will expand to 16 Latin American countries. This system allows users themselves to add context and complementary information to posts, functioning similarly to the model already implemented on X (formerly Twitter).
The company admits that the current third-party fact-checking system could be replaced by Community Notes. This change represents a significant shift in how misinformation is combated on Meta's platforms.
The Community Notes model works through voluntary contributions from users, who can add explanatory notes to posts they consider misleading or that need more context. This system was developed to be more transparent and participatory.
The expansion to Latin America is part of Meta's broader strategy to reform its content moderation policies. The company justifies this change with the need to offer a system that considers different cultural perspectives and local contexts.
