The chief of the British intelligence agency MI5, General Ken McCallum, made a public statement on Friday warning that the next terrorist plan on the scale of September 11, 2001 may already be forming somewhere where no one is yet looking. The statement was made on the 11th, the date marking the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States.
McCallum chose the date to make an appeal for governments, businesses and the public to unite in preventing another attack. In an editorial published in the Independent newspaper, he wrote that care is needed not to brilliantly prepare to fight yesterday's enemy, using yesterday's methods against yesterday's target.
According to the MI5 director, the next strategic shock, by definition, will not resemble the last one. He highlighted that, unlike in 2001, many security systems and services are currently operated by the private sector, which requires new forms of collaboration to prevent future attacks.
