Accident causes traffic disruption on Estrada Monumental

dnoticias.pt11 September 2026 at 14:26

A passenger car collided with a plane tree on Estrada Monumental, in the Lido area, in Funchal. The accident caused significant damage to the front wheel on the right side of the vehicle, which was unable to continue its journey.

The trunk of the tree now occupies part of the traffic lane, being between the road and the pedestrian walkway. Traffic circulation is being disrupted, with traffic flowing alternately in both directions due to the blockage of one of the lanes.

The accident is causing congestion on the road, affecting drivers travelling in that area of Funchal.

Three people rescued and identified after "flying speedboat" drifts adrift

Three people, two of Spanish nationality and one Swedish, aged between 25 and 40, were rescued last night after the high-speed vessel they were on drifted adrift about 60 nautical miles west of Viana do Castelo. The alert was received by MRCC Lisbon and the victims were initially assisted by a merchant ship, then transferred to Portuguese maritime authorities. The vessel was towed to the port of Viana do Castelo and seized as a precautionary measure. The three people, although physically well, were identified as part of an ongoing process, in coordination with the Judicial Police and the Public Ministry. The authorities rule out, for now, any connection to another similar incident that occurred hours earlier at Moledo beach, in Caminha.
