US inflation holds steady at 3.4% and prices rise faster since May

Euronews Portugal11 September 2026 at 14:27

US consumer prices rose 3.4% in August compared to the same month in 2023, holding at the same level recorded in July. This value represents a stabilization in the annual inflation rate.

However, the monthly increase was 0.4%, the highest since May, indicating an acceleration of prices in the short term. This data suggests that the energy shock is already having an impact on the North American economy.

The figures come just four days before a Federal Reserve decision on possible further interest rate hikes. The monthly acceleration of inflation may influence the central bank's position on this issue.

August IPCA deflation goes beyond the Itaipu effect

The August IPCA registered deflation of 0.32%, driven mainly by the Itaipu bonus, which reduced electricity prices across the country. However, the result cannot be explained solely by this effect, since four of the nine groups monitored by IBGE also registered deflation: Housing (-1.87%), Transportation (-0.86%), Food and beverages, and Communication. Residential electricity fell 7.63%, while airline tickets retreated 13.17% and fuels 0.91%. In the 12-month accumulated, the index stood at 4.22%, within the target range. The text also compares food inflation: 54.2% under the Bolsonaro government versus 13.6% under the Lula government, highlighting that despite the favorable data, the consumer still doesn't feel relief.
