Single-parent families. BE proposes one-year parental leave

Observador11 September 2026 at 13:36

The Left Block (BE) presented a proposal for single parents to be entitled to one year of paid parental leave. This measure aims to support single-parent families, which face specific challenges in balancing family and professional life.

The PSD proposed a different approach, suggesting the exclusion of single-parent families from the extension of initial parental leave to six months. This position contrasts with the proposals of other parties to the left of the political spectrum.

Livre, for its part, presented an intermediate proposal, advocating eight months of parental leave. The different positions reflect the ongoing debate on how best to support families, particularly single-parent ones, in Portuguese legislation.

The article arises in the context of a broader discussion on family policies and support for birth rates, where parties present different proposals on the duration and conditions of parental leave for different types of household.
