The GNR today launched the "Safe School" operation 2026/2027, which aims to mark the return to classes with awareness actions directed at students, teachers, and parents. The campaign covers more than 4,400 educational establishments and approximately 670,000 students in the GNR's area of responsibility in mainland Portuguese territory.
During the last school year, the GNR recorded 2,631 crimes in school settings, among which the following stand out: simple voluntary physical assault with 950 cases, threats and coercion with 388 cases, theft with 137 cases, and defamation, slander, and insult with 118 cases. More serious crimes were also recorded, although with lower numbers, including 61 crimes against sexual freedom and self-determination, 45 cases of child abuse, and 45 cases of possession or trafficking of prohibited weapons.
In addition to crimes, GNR military personnel recorded 748 non-criminal incidents, namely 374 disruptions to school activities, 230 situations of school dropout, and 84 addictive behaviors. In the previous school year, the GNR carried out 17,276 awareness actions involving 790,073 users of the school community.
The PSP has also reinforced its presence since September 7th in the surroundings of educational establishments and on home-to-school routes, as part of the Safe School Program. The "Start of School Year 2026/2027" operation is preventive in nature and covers the entire national territory, with special attention to increased traffic flow and safety in school transportation.
