Two PSP officers from the Rato station, in Lisbon, have begun their trial for torture and rape crimes. The main defendant faces 29 charges, including physical assaults and sexual abuse. The punches, slaps, rifle butt strikes and sexual abuse are part of the accusations against the two police officers.
Some of the alleged assaults were reportedly filmed by the officers themselves. The images were subsequently shared in WhatsApp groups with dozens of other police officers, which is said to have allowed the dissemination of the violent acts committed at the police station.
The trial is taking place in court and marks a significant moment in accountability within the Public Security Police, in a case involving serious accusations of violations of fundamental rights by those who should be protecting citizens.
