The GNR rescued thirteen companion animals, four dogs and nine cats, in a situation of serious neglect in the parish of Gafanha da Encarnação, in the municipality of Ílhavo. The operation was carried out by the Territorial Post of Gafanha da Nazaré and the Environmental Protection Unit of the Territorial Detachment of Aveiro, in coordination with the municipal services of Ílhavo and Vagos.
The action took place as part of a report of animal abuse. On site, the military officers found that some of the dogs were undernourished and that all the animals were kept in very poor hygienic conditions, which compromised their well-being.
The authorities also verified that the situation constituted a public health problem in the surrounding area, due to the accumulation of waste and animal feces. The health condition of the animals was assessed by the Municipal Veterinarian of Vagos, and they were subsequently transported to the municipal services of Ílhavo and Vagos.
The owner of the animals was taken to the psychiatry department of Aveiro Hospital for assessment of her clinical condition, and was subsequently made a suspect in the case.
