A team of researchers analyzed over more than 20 years a total of 30 thousand observations belonging to 405 species of arthropods, a group that includes insects and crustaceans, in the native forests of the Azores.
The study concluded that biodiversity in these island ecosystems is not necessarily on the brink of collapse, contradicting the pessimistic trend often associated with global biodiversity loss.
The results suggest that the native forests of the Azores function as relatively stable habitats for these species, where many of them manage to maintain healthy populations over time.
This research offers a more nuanced perspective on the state of biodiversity, indicating that not all ecosystems face the same level of threat and that some may present greater resilience than expected.
