A fire devastates about 40 stores in the Tarajal migrant camp, in Ceuta

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General11 September 2026 at 08:12

The autonomous city of Ceuta registered new fires this early morning after the unrest of recent days. One of the fires affected several warehouses of El Tarajal, where migrant camps are located. The fire destroyed approximately 40 stores in the migrant camp in the area.

The El Tarajal camp is a place where migrants live in the border area between Ceuta and Morocco. Migrants who inhabit this area usually light bonfires to keep warm during the night.

Another smaller fire of a forest nature burned an area of scrubland. The authorities believe this second fire may be related to the bonfires that migrants light in the area.

The fires occur after days of riots in the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta, a territory located on the north coast of Africa.

MP requests five years in prison for defendant in Troia shipwreck that killed four people

The Public Prosecution Service requested a sentence of no less than five years in prison for Manuel Coelho, 64 years old, the helmsman and sole survivor of the shipwreck that occurred in April 2024 off Troia, in which four people died. At the Setúbal court, the prosecutor requested two and a half years in prison for each of the four counts of negligent homicide. The defense argued that the deaths were caused by an "unpredictable wave," while prosecution witnesses stated that the shipwreck occurred in an area with sandbanks and adverse sea conditions, with wave forecasts that advised against navigation. A lawyer for the families argued that the sentence should only be suspended upon payment of compensation of hundreds of thousands of euros. The reading of the verdict is scheduled for October 9.
