A submarine with 6.6 tons of high-purity cocaine, valued at over R$ 2 billion, was seized in March 2025 in the Azores archipelago region, Portugal, during a joint police and Navy operation. The seizure caught the attention of authorities not only by the volume of the drug, but also by the origin of the shipment: Macapá, the capital of Amapá, located at the mouth of the Amazon River. The route used elite divers recruited from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo to operationalize the sending of cocaine from the Amazon to Europe.
