The Lisbon Prison will begin closing its doors in October. The Secretary of State for Justice, Gonçalo da Cunha Pires, announced that Wing E will be the first to close.
Approximately 250 inmates will be transferred to three different prisons. This is the first phase of the process to close the prison facility.
The announcement was made by the government official during a visit to the Lisbon prison. The gradual closure is part of a broader plan to restructure the prison system in Portugal.
