The Judicial Police has issued a warning to Portuguese taxpayers regarding a new scam attempt that is circulating through fraudulent communications. The scammers are sending messages that appear to come from the Tax and Customs Authority, relating them to alleged IRS refunds.
The identified messages have the subject line "2025 Approved Refund," seeking to create in recipients the expectation that they would be receiving money. In the examples analyzed by the PJ, amounts ranging between 3,936 and 7,989 euros are indicated.
The fraudulent communication uses various mechanisms to appear legitimate and deceive taxpayers, taking advantage of the proximity of the IRS filing season to maximize the probability of success of the scheme. The PJ recommends that taxpayers be vigilant and always verify the authenticity of any communication regarding tax refunds through official channels.
