Helena Mendes, former handball player and one of the most international players ever in Portuguese women's handball, will take on the role of assistant coach in the National Team A, which will also now be coached by Sandra Fernandes. This appointment marks Helena Mendes' return to the national team structure.
Helena Mendes has been based in Madeira for over two decades. She arrived on the archipelago in the early nineties of the last century to play for Club Sports da Madeira, where she developed her sporting career.
In addition to being a successful player, Helena Mendes is a Physical Education teacher. Throughout her career, she has been associated with Clube Escola da Levada and, more recently, performed coaching duties on a team, thus accumulating experience both as an athlete and as a coach.
