Aveiro / Hospital: Luís Souto has "indications" that the Emergency Department may undergo renovations

NotíciasdeAveiro.pt10 September 2026 at 17:24

The Emergency Department of the Aveiro hospital may need renovation works before the planned expansion moves forward, which is awaiting the award of the design project for the new outpatient building, which has been subject to legal challenge. The information was conveyed by the mayor of Aveiro, Luís Souto, during the public meeting of the municipal executive.

Luís Souto stated that there are "indications" that the renovation of the Emergency Department may move forward shortly, resolving a "glaring shortage" that can no longer be tolerated, criticizing the existence of containers at the hospital without a defined deadline. The last renovation of the emergency department dates back 16 years.

The matter was raised by councilor Diogo Machado, from Chega, who reported on a meeting held by party elected members with the administration of the Local Health Unit of the Aveiro Region. Luís Souto reaffirmed that the municipality has "everything prepared and done" for the expansion, namely with the renewal of adjacent land to accommodate the new outpatient and Clinical Academic Center buildings led by the University of Aveiro.

Also in the health sector, a survey of problems at local health units is being carried out to prepare investments, with priority maintained for the city's health center. The Nossa Senhora de Fátima health unit, in the south of the municipality, is in an advanced stage of completion, with state co-funding having been secured.

Garotinho also proposed a "BOPE 2.0" and the creation of subway line 3 with "super ferries", but dodged questions about support for Lula or his son Flavio Bolsonaro, leaving his presidential vote open.
