A new study published in the scientific journal The Lancet Digital Health demonstrates that it is possible to predict the future progression of glaucoma from a simple photograph of the eye taken at the first consultation. The research uses artificial intelligence to analyze images and identify patterns that indicate the risk of disease progression.
The study had the participation of João Barbosa Breda, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto (FMUP). He is one of the authors of the scientific article that explores this innovative approach in the diagnosis and monitoring of glaucoma.
The team responsible for the research is international, bringing together researchers from different countries. This collaboration allowed the collection and analysis of data from multiple populations, strengthening the applicability of the study's results.
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of preventable blindness worldwide. The ability to predict the progression of the disease early represents a significant advance in ophthalmological medicine, allowing for more timely and personalized interventions to preserve patients' vision.
