ERC condemns TVI for approach to rape case on Cristina's program

SAPO Notícias10 September 2026 at 16:53

The Regulatory Council of the Regulatory Entity for Social Communication (ERC) concluded that TVI violated journalistic conduct and ethical norms in the approach to a rape case on Cristina Ferreira's program. The ERC considered that the station did not observe the antenna ethics required by law, issuing a critical opinion on how the topic was addressed.

The interview in question, conducted by Cristina Ferreira, treated a rape case in a way that the regulator understood to relativize and justify the facts. This approach was considered incompatible with the standards of responsibility that legislation requires from program services.

The ERC regulation establishes that fiction content and entertainment programs are equally subject to compliance with conduct rules, including the protection of human dignity. The Regulatory Council applied this norm to the TVI case, considering that the broadcaster failed this duty.

The regulator's decision underscores the responsibility of television operators in addressing sensitive topics, particularly when they involve serious crimes such as rape. The ERC thus reinforces the need for rigor and respect for victims' rights in any programming context.
