The company Águas do Centro Litoral (AdCL) is investing 5.5 million euros to make infrastructures more resilient in the hydrographic basin of the Lis river. The president of the board of directors, Filipa Alves, explained that this investment arose due to two events: an accident at a pumping station in Monte Real, in the municipality of Leiria, and the effects of depression Kristin, which caused failures in electricity supply and additional wear on the systems.
On August 12, 2025, a breakdown at the pumping station managed by AdCL forced the discharge of untreated effluents into the Lis river. The Portuguese Environment Agency estimated that between 20 thousand and 25 thousand cubic meters of raw sewage were released, which also affected irrigation ditches.
The 5.5 million euro investment includes the renovation of equipment such as pumps, generators, valves and electrical panels, as well as automation systems for better monitoring. Filipa Alves added that 4.1 million euros already have signed contracts, with some equipment delivered and others in the delivery phase. The measures also aim to improve communication systems and the logistics of spare parts.
The president of AdCL also warned that the bed of the Lis river is eroding the banks at an accelerated rate, putting some of the company's infrastructures at risk of exposure. The situation was reported to APA so that it promotes the regularization of the river bed and banks. AdCL is responsible for the multimunicipal water supply and sanitation system of the Centro Litoral region, serving 30 municipalities and a population of 725 thousand inhabitants.
